David began serving in rescue and EMS in 1975. He was a founding and charter member of the Garner Rescue Squad, and began working for Wake County EMS shortly after they went into service. David has served on various State sponsored search and rescue committees, was involved in the pilot programs for the NC certifications in BRT, ART, ERT, and RT. He also piloted out many of the specialty rescue programs. He started the Reds Team in 1986.  David is married and has two daughters, two step daughters, 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.

Having led 2 rescue training mission trips to Guatemala, he continues to work at bringing good fire and rescue training to those in Central America. David also participated in one search mission in Costa Rica as well as jungle survival training there. He writes two columns in the Carolina Fire/Rescue/EMS Journal and has written for RescueTechnologies Magazine as well as numerous other publications. He was a presenter at FDIC for several years, along with Captain Luke Steele.
